Where to Stay in Valparaiso: Airbnb, Hotels, or Booking Direct?

Full disclosure up front: we're Airbnb Superhosts. Our four downtown Valparaiso apartments have a 4.96-star average across 206 reviews on the platform, and we're grateful for every one. But after 11 years of hosting, we also know exactly what the platforms add to your bill — so here's the honest breakdown we'd give a friend planning a Valpo trip.

Option 1: Hotels by the highway

Valparaiso's hotels cluster along the commercial corridors, a drive from downtown. They're fine — predictable rooms, points programs — but you'll drive to every meal, every event, and every coffee. If your trip is about downtown Valpo (the Popcorn Festival, Central Park Plaza events, a Valparaiso University weekend), the location tax is real: parking hassles on event days and a car between you and everything fun.

Option 2: Airbnb / Vrbo vacation rentals

Downtown vacation rentals (ours included) give you what hotels can't: full kitchens, in-unit laundry, separate bedrooms, free parking, and a walk-everywhere location. The catch is the checkout math. On Airbnb, a guest service fee — typically in the range of 14–15% of the booking subtotal — lands on top of the nightly rate and cleaning fee. On a $600 stay, that's roughly $85–90 that goes to the platform, not to your host, your cleaner, or your weekend.

Option 3: Book the same rental, direct

Many established hosts run their own booking sites, and the deal is simple: same apartment, same hosts, same beds — minus the platform's cut. On our site, the identical units from our Airbnb listings price out at roughly 10% below the Airbnb all-in total, with no service fee line at checkout, ever.

Two honest caveats, because this is the part other "book direct" pitches skip:

• Platform protections differ. Airbnb has its own resolution process. Booking direct, your protection is the host's policies and reputation — so read the cancellation policy (ours: full refund up to 14 days out) and check the host's track record before booking anywhere direct.
• Vetting goes both ways. We ask direct guests for an e-signed rental agreement, ID verification, and a refundable deposit hold. Three extra minutes at booking; it's what lets us offer the discount confidently.

The bottom line

First time trying a host you don't know? Booking through a platform is a reasonable comfort blanket. But if the host has a decade of reviews — or you've stayed with them before — booking direct is the same stay for less money, with a human answering the messages. That's the whole pitch.
