Visiting Valparaiso University? Stay Downtown, 1.5 Miles from Campus
Every August it's the same story: move-in weekend at Valparaiso University, and every hotel within twenty minutes is booked or surge-priced. Same for family weekends, admitted-student visits, and especially graduation. After 11 years of hosting Valpo parents, here's our case for skipping the highway hotels entirely.
The downtown alternative
Our four apartments sit in downtown Valparaiso's central business district — about 1.5 miles from campus, a four-minute drive or a pleasant walk on a nice day. But unlike a hotel room, you get the things that make a family trip actually comfortable:
- Two real bedrooms (in three of our four units) — parents in one, siblings or grandparents in the other, instead of two queens and a cot.
- A full kitchen — early move-in mornings start with real coffee and breakfast, not a lobby waffle line.
- In-unit laundry — underrated when you're hauling a freshman's entire life in August heat.
- Free onsite parking with EV charging — no valet, no fees, no circling.
- A walkable evening — when the campus events wrap, you're a block from downtown's restaurants and bars instead of a parking lot off the bypass.
The weekends that book out
Mark these and book early — they're our most-requested university dates every year:
- August move-in weekend — pairs nicely with a last-hurrah Indiana Dunes beach day.
- Family weekend (fall) — often colliding with festival season downtown; check the events calendar.
- Admitted student days (spring) — bring the whole family, cook dinner together, talk it over.
- Graduation (May) — the big one. Groups can book both of our Saran-building units and have the entire garden floor to themselves.
A note for visiting academics & long stays
Visiting professors, traveling clinicians, and university families in transition: all four units have dedicated workspaces or dining tables that double as desks, fast fiber internet, and we welcome longer stays — message us through the booking page about multi-week dates.
