Where to Eat & Drink in Downtown Valpo: A Host's Short List
Every guest gets a welcome binder in our apartments with our full list of local favorites. (Want the long version? See the Ultimate Valpo Dining Guide.) This is the short version — the downtown Valparaiso spots we send people to over and over, all within a few minutes' walk of our front doors in the Eldorado and Saran buildings.
Morning
Birdie's Diner — a five-minute walk down Lincolnway and the breakfast answer in Valpo. Classic diner done right; expect a weekend line and join it anyway.
Fluid Coffee — less than a block from the Saran building. Proper espresso, a good place to plan the day. (We also stock local coffee in the apartments — it's our standard welcome gift.)
The Valpo Market — Tuesday and Saturday mornings in season at Central Park Plaza: bakery stands, fresh produce, and lunch vendors. Buy breakfast, then cook tomorrow's in your full kitchen.
Lunch & casual
Brick Street Burrito — literally adjacent to our buildings. The "we just drove three hours and need food immediately" move, and a downtown Valpo institution for on-the-go eating.
Dinner & drinks
Nextdoor at Birdie's — the diner's evening sibling: cocktails and dinner a short walk down Lincolnway.
Lincoln Flats — the neighborhood restaurant and bar on the corner right next to our buildings. The single most-mentioned spot in our guest reviews; perfect for a nightcap when "home" is thirty seconds away.
The downtown advantage
Notice what's missing from this guide: driving. Staying in downtown Valparaiso means breakfast, dinner, drinks, the plaza events, and your bed are all on the same few blocks — and in winter, those restaurant receipts even get you discounted ice skating at Central Park Plaza.
Sleep upstairs from all of it
Our four apartments put this entire list within a five-minute walk — with full kitchens for the market hauls and free parking so the car stays put. About 10% less than booking the same units on Airbnb.
